The Midlands: powering national growth
31 October 2014
St George's Park Hilton, Newborough Road, Burton-on-Trent, DE13 9PD
The closure of the Scottish referendum campaign with vows to offer further devolution north of the border, raises the question of what next for the English regions? English votes, for English laws, notwithstanding the underlying complexity of the issue, offers part of the solution but does not address what forms devolution of government in England should take or indeed whether it is needed. Each of the main political parties offers different approaches, and with the Northern Hub proposal as well as the existing successful Greater London Authority, other regions are moving forward at pace. This conference seeks to examine what would be best for the Midlands and how the various institutions in the region could work positively together.
The conference aims to set an agenda for greater Midlands’ co-operation to more dynamically and effectively harness the existing powers and explore what further responsibilities need to be assumed to sustain local economic success.
